Certification & Training Standards – ASH WA

Understanding ‘Certification’ in Hypnosis in Australia

In Australia, hypnosis is no longer a regulated profession, which means any person may legally call themselves a hypnotherapist or offer hypnosis training, regardless of their qualifications or clinical background. Many private training providers offer short courses that include ‘certification’. These certificates are not nationally recognised and do not confer professional accreditation or registration.

How ASH WA Differs

The Australian Society of Hypnosis WA (ASH WA) is a not-for-profit professional society affiliated with the International Society of Hypnosis. ASH WA trains only AHPRA-registered healthcare practitioners, AASW social workers, and ACA-registered counsellors. Training is delivered live online by a diverse faculty of experienced clinicians—both international and local—who use hypnosis professionally within healthcare settings.

Our program provides structured, evidence-informed education designed to help practitioners integrate hypnosis safely and ethically into clinical practice.

Why ASH WA Does Not Issue ‘Certificates of Qualification’

Only Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) may issue nationally accredited qualifications under the AQF. ASH WA is not an RTO, and therefore does not issue diplomas or qualifications. Instead, we provide a rigorous professional development program that emphasises clinical skills, ethical practice, and practical competence.

Choosing a Training Program Wisely

When selecting hypnosis training, consider:
– Who teaches the course and their clinical qualifications
– Whether the organisation is a professional society or commercial provider
– Whether training is designed specifically for healthcare professionals
– How training aligns with ethics and professional responsibilities
– What the certificate actually represents (interest course vs. professional development vs. AQF qualification)

ASH WA’s Position

ASH WA supports transparency in hypnosis education, clear communication about what ‘certification’ means, and the ongoing elevation of professional standards within healthcare. Our training is designed to provide clinically relevant skills, not to issue qualifications.
